On September 29, 2009, an earthquake and subsequent tsunami wreaked devastation on much of the South coast of Samoa. Many people and organisations have already responded to the immediate need for relief and recovery. It's now time to help with the re-building.
One of the lesser known destructions was four Telecentres, used by the communities for basic computing and communications with the outside world. These centres have been a key part of the communities for four years and are already sorely missed.
The 2020 Communications Trust, InternetNZ, The Samoa Ministry of ICT, Computer Services Ltd (Samoa), the Secretariat for the Pacific Community, Microsoft New Zealand staff and, hopefully, you are now banding together to address the need for rebuilding four telecentres that were destroyed.
For each of the four Telecentres, we're looking for the following, in cash or kind:
- 6-8 laptop computers & software
- 1 Printer/Scanner w/supply of paper and ink
- 1 B&W Laser Printer
- Communications hub (router/switch) & cables
- 1 data projector
- Freight and Logistics
We estimate that the overall cost, per recovered tele-centre, will be about NZ$10,000.
The 2020 Trust is providing off-shore coordination; InternetNZ is providing cash and technical assistance, The Samoa Ministry of ICT and Computer Services Ltd are providing on-shore logistics and technical support, the Secretariat for the Pacific Community is providing satellite equipment, and Microsoft New Zealand staff are providing cash.
