13 Wanganui families celebrate new digital skills

13 Wanganui families will graduate from the national Computers in Homes, Rorohiko I roto nga Kainga, programme today with a ceremony at Whanganui UCOL.
Parents received 20 hours of computer training including word processing, emailing and using the Internet, conducted at Wanganui East School. The training aims to empower parents to become actively involved in the online world and their children's learning, as well as increase their own employment opportunities and confidence.
Computers in Homes has now reached over 171 families in Wanganui. Since the programme started in 2000 it has supported almost 5,000 New Zealand families nationwide with refurbished computers, six months of free internet access, computer training and technical support via their local school.
Tauranga primary students land win for recycling message

Four students from Maungatapu School in Tauranga have been named the winners of New Zealand's first e-Waste Eddie Awards.
The national competition was run as part of School eDay, a free event which provided an opportunity for New Zealand schools to safely recycle unused computer equipment while teaching students about the benefits of recycling electronic waste (e-waste).
To enter, students created advertisements about the benefits of recycling e-waste using the interactive software programme Marvin and featuring School eDay mascot e-Waste Eddie.
The first-equal winners were Year Five student Kimberley King and Year Six students Aimee Tomlinson, Casey Bartlam and Selena Wright. For their prize, the school will receive a Canon digital video camera and have a custom avatar created for their school based on a sketch drawn by the students.

52 more families from the Whangarei region are celebrating completing the Computers in Homes programme this month.
Parents received 20 hours of computer training including word processing, emailing and using the Internet, conducted at their local school or community centre. The training aims to empower parents to become actively involved in the online world and their children's learning, as well as increase their own employment opportunities and confidence.
Computers in Homes has now reached over 80 families in Whangarei. Since the programme began in 2000 the programme has supported almost 5,000 New Zealand families nationwide with refurbished computers, six months of free internet access, computer training and technical support via their local school.
A graduation ceremony is being held today at Te Kura o Waikare for the 14 families who have completed their training in Kawakawa. The celebration will be attended by Labour List MP Kelvin Davis and National Computers in Homes Coordinator Di Das.
New Technology Boost for Kaikoura High School

Kaikoura High School has received a technology boost recently by winning a Polycom high resolution videoconferencing system.
The state-of-the-art system was donated by leading New Zealand technology provider, Asnet Technologies, after the school was randomly drawn from the 300 New Zealand schools that participated in the recent 2020 Communications Trust ICT in schools 2009 survey.
Kaikoura High School launched their new system by holding a multi-site videoconference to release the survey report last month. Students took part at the high school while Local MP for Kaikoura, Colin King participated in the linkup from Blenheim and Kaikoura High Principal Werner van Aswegen joined in from Christchurch.
Winning Schools celebrate success at UNESCO Living Heritage Awards 2009

Three New Zealand primary schools which each created a Living Heritage website have received a UNESCO Living Heritage award during the National Digital Forum, held earlier this week at Te Papa in Wellington.
The awards recognise the schools' creative contributions to the preservation of New Zealand's history and culture.
